ECONOMIC AND ENGINEERING FEASIBILITY

It is not enough for the Bright Angel valley to be historically valuable and aesthetically pleasing.  The valley and the businesses and towns in it must also be economically viable; and any construction that is called for must be practical to carry out.  These things will determine how attractive the project is to the land-managing government agencies, and also how attractive a prospect it will be to people who are considering construction there.

We are still working on these issues, but have written on the following three topics as provisional answers.  While not yet definitive, these studies do suggest that the valley, under a variety of reasonable assumptions, is likely to pay for itself:

1.   Preliminary study of the economic feasibility of the frontier area.

2.   Alternative preliminary study, conducted by a different person and with a different methodology, but reaching generally similar conclusions.

3.   Plan for more detailed future research.  This research will consider economic, engineering, and planning issues in more depth than we have achieved so far.  It is designed to serve two purposes in particular:  (1) to produce a more definitive version of the economic feasibility studies listed above; and (2) to produce a fuller version of the place-specific plan for Nye County that is set out elsewhere on the website, with attention to the engineering, historical, and environmental considerations specific to the valleys in the northern part of the county.
